The Bedroom Series

A child of two cultures.

The first culture is living from day to day, here in the Netherlands.

The second culture is the memory, a possible alternative life, my country of birth.

The duality of these two parallel realities forms the conceptual source from which I make my paintings.

The image which presents itself when my eyes are opened, the other presents itself when I close my eyes. As if by itself a new, individual reality grows in the in-between area..

The painting originates from a sense of urgency to give this “own” reality meaning and visual representation. To search for the meaning that presents itself as an area of primitivism, simplicity, observation, narrative versus abstraction.

The painting develops from a visual archive, which exists in my memories. In my paintings I look for the artificial character of our reality.
