Patterns designed by self-defence students that allows them to start a conversation or get a better grip on their feelings.

Mental Palpation is a series of textures generated by feelings and emotions. As a Hapkido self-defence instructor, I find it very important to not only practice and work on the physical elements of the sports, but I’m also making sure that we work on our mental and emotional health.

As a designer, I have developed textures to allow my students to get a better grip on their feelings and emotions. Which often can be very hard for people with an emotional disorder like autism or ADD, which is also exactly the reason why I started this project.

During an intense collaboration between me, my students and a few stakeholders we were able to shape, create and test out different textures which represent different personal feelings and emotions. My research slowly but surely unfolds: what does a feeling look like in a physical form?
