Fabrics and Wings

I am guided by the mystique of complex insects and 17th-century saints. With black ink and Siberian chalk, I draw the monks and angels from Francisco de Zurbarán’s paintings and the patterns on the wings of butterflies. Immersing myself in an image archive composed of details, I follow the folds and scales I encounter in the fabrics and dots. I extend Zurbarán’s dark backgrounds to empty eye sockets and surfaces while I discover similarities between feelers and embroidery. As I move my crayon over the paper, I try to build an ever-closer relationship with the figures I study. Somehow we always end up in an eclipsed world together.
