Kogel door de kerk; (Dutch proverb) 1. (usually after a long debate), a decision was made; the die was (finally) cast. 2. a bullet through the church. Not fitting in is a feeling that many minorities face within their lifetime. The disgusted stares, the silent whispers behind your back, the barely concealed laughter as you walk by. In this project, the artist shares the struggle of experiencing conflicting feelings from the perspective of a queer woman raised in the Christian church. The installation is a journey of conformity, pain, and doubt, to realization, ending with a big fuck you to all the people that oppressed you. The interactive installation shows how the cultural perceptions you grew up with never really leave you. This can cause pain, but it can also be reclaimed and given a new meaning.
