In this installation, viewers will observe themselves through small viewing boxes and listen to spoken text about my conception of identity, social media and observation.
The act of being transparent and showcasing ourselves online, which has become the new norm, has a profound impact on our identities. By broadcasting our lives on social media platforms, we try to grasp a sense of control over this self-presentation. However, this curated self raises my concerns about the authenticity of our identity. Online platforms like Instagram and Facebook have become commercialized, selling your information to companies for targeted advertisement. This phenomenon is called surveillance capitalism and in combination with the surveillance we do ourselves, I think there’s no space for authentic and diverse self exploration.
