The Polyverter
We all agree that we use too much plastic in everyday life. It is used for almost everything. It can take up to a thousand years for this plastic to break down completely. We are still living in the anthropocene, an era in which we have destroyed enough ecosystems, animal species and nature reserves. This brings us closer to the symbiocene, a new era. During my graduation project I came up with a way in which people can process their own plastic using plastic-eating fungus. I asked myself the question: can I, as a designer, have people break down plastic themselves? The Polyverter is a speculative compost bin which breaks down plastic using fungi. Every container is another step of the process. With my project I want to show that it is possible to work together with nature, instead of against it.
